Ubon Ratchathani Prawn Parade

Annual Prawn Migration Event

About the Event

The Ubon Ratchathani Prawn Parade, also known as the Prawn Parade Festival, is an annual event that takes place in the Kaeng Lamduan area of Nam Yuen district in Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand. The festival usually occurs on September 1st.

Prawn Migration

During the festival, spectators can witness the unique phenomenon of prawns marching from two different strong-flowing rivers in the Kaeng Lamduan region. The prawns march a distance of approximately 65 feet from sunset to sunrise. To ensure that the prawns don’t dry out during their journey, they keep their gills moist by moving in proximity to the water’s edge.

Challenges for the Prawns

Despite their nightly migration, the prawns are not without dangers. Predators such as frogs, snakes, and large spiders await the prawns along the riverbanks, ready to catch and consume them. Additionally, some prawns may get lost and perish before reaching the river again.
